Boston Blue S2 Premiere: Danny's Promotion Explained
Donnie Wahlberg and the showrunners break down the emotional promotion, Brian's survival, and the new threat against the Silvers. Reported by TVLine.

Donnie Wahlberg says he and Sonequa Martin-Green initially disagreed about Danny Reagan's promotion to detective sergeant in the Season 2 premiere of "Boston Blue." Wahlberg told TVLine he wanted Danny to hesitate because it would impact partner Lena Silver. Martin-Green wanted Lena to encourage Danny for the Reagan legacy.
Danny only accepts the promotion after Lena gives her blessing. Wahlberg said the conversation was as important to the actors as it was to their characters.
Len Cariou returns as Henry "Gramps" Reagan via video call in the premiere. Wahlberg told TVLine that reunions with "Blue Bloods" co-stars have occasionally left him and co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier in tears.
Detective Brian Rogers survives an attempted murder but struggles with PTSD. Showrunner Brandon Margolis told TVLine they never seriously considered killing him off. They wanted to avoid more grief after Season 1's loss of Ben Silver, and they love actor Ryan Broussard.
Lena discovers Brian's attack may be linked to a larger threat against the Silvers. A political opponent warns Lena that "someone is coming for your family." Margolis told TVLine the threat comes from someone close to the family.
Mae's reelection campaign hits a snag when opposition research reveals her car was spotted outside a family planning clinic in 1985. TVLine reports that Mae was actually there supporting her sister Jill, who had an abortion. Their father Reverend Peters remains unaware. Holly Robinson Peete played Jill in Season 1. Showrunners told TVLine the fallout will involve a reconciliation within the Peters family, and Jill will return this season.
