East of Eden, the seven-part Netflix limited series based on John Steinbeck's 1952 novel, has become the No. 1 show on the service, Collider reports.

The series premiered Oct. 1. Florence Pugh plays Cathy Ames, and Netflix calls her an antihero whose path winds through generations of the Trask family. The story follows brothers Adam and Charles Trask and spans decades, from the American Civil War to World War I.

Zoe Kazan is behind the adaptation, Collider reports. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film version starring James Dean. Collider notes the series gives Cathy more room than that movie, which concentrated on the later part of the novel.

The reviews cited by Collider are strong. Nick Hilton of The Independent calls it “a lush, thoughtful new Netflix mini-series,” and The Guardian calls it “brilliant, compelling entertainment,” praising the performances and production.

Per Collider, Pugh stars opposite Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask.

The series is available only on Netflix, per Collider.
