Immortal Soldiers cover hints at a Nick Fury return

Marvel announced the Avengers one-shot at New York Comic Con, and its cover appears to show a skeletal Nick Fury in a HYDRA coat.

Marvel Comics

**Reported:** Marvel announced a new Avengers spin-off at New York Comic Con, Screen Rant reports, and it is a one-shot called Immortal Soldiers.

**Confirmed:** the issue arrives in January 2027 from Marvel Comics, from the same creative team as Avengers: Armageddon, Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto.

The announcement lands mid-reshuffle for Marvel's flagship team. Screen Rant reports that the limited series Avengers: Armageddon wraps later this month, and that Zdarsky and Checchetto then start a new Avengers title. Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Daredevil, Spider-Man, Wolverine and the new Miracleman are on the roster. Screen Rant says that team keeps a lower profile because the public has stopped trusting it after Armageddon, and that Maximum X-Men take over the Earth's Mightiest Heroes role.

Immortal Soldiers is the follow-up Marvel revealed over the weekend. Screen Rant says the one-shot sets up stories to come, and that it appears to hang on one of Marvel's oldest characters.

The Fury question

The solicitation for issue #1 says the book is "setting the stage for a new year of stories and mysteries", picking up after Armageddon ignites another war, with a public that has given up on heroes.

Who will step up to the plate and keep watch over the planet when we need it the most?

The cover, drawn by Ben Harvey, shows a figure that looks like a skeletal Nick Fury, and the coat on him is HYDRA's, not S.H.I.E.L.D.'s. **Rumor:** Screen Rant reads that as a possible return to Earth for the original Nick Fury, who has spent years as a cosmic character.

His recent history is strange. In 2014's Original Sin, Fury became The Unseen, with the cosmic awareness shared by Uatu and the other Watchers. He lost that power when Uatu came back, and later took multiverse-protection duty for the Watcher after Reckoning War.

Nick Fury Jr. took over as Earth's resident spymaster, and Screen Rant notes that he looks like the Ultimate Universe original and like the version Samuel L. Jackson plays in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The two Furys last shared a page in Fury #1 from 2023, when the elder chose to "vacation" in another universe and handed his son the "Man on the Wall" job.

What's still unclear

The coat is the piece that does not fit. The elder Fury spent his S.H.I.E.L.D. years trying to wipe HYDRA out. HYDRA's last outing was under Doctor Doom in One World Under Doom, and it fell apart when the Avengers and their allies got involved.

Screen Rant also flags an open question: whether the title references the Infinity Formula, which both men have used to stay young. Plot details follow Avengers: Armageddon #5, Screen Rant reports.

Our take: the cover is the strongest part of the announcement. With the story still months out, one unsettling image has to carry the book, and a Fury in the wrong uniform does it.

It's a comics release, so there's nothing to add to your watchlist tonight. Immortal Soldiers #1 is out in January 2027.
