Lanterns Finale Sets Up John Stewart for Man of Tomorrow Debut

The first season of HBO's Lanterns ends by launching John Stewart into the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, Screen Rant reports.

Spoilers for Lanterns season 1 follow.

Screen Rant reports that the season finale of Lanterns does exactly what a good finale should: it sets up what comes next. John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, takes Hal Jordan's ring and Sinestro's lantern, officially becoming Earth's new Green Lantern. He tells Guy Gardner he will serve as the planet's guardian, a role Hal held until his death earlier in the season.

That oath directly leads into the next big DC Universe film. Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel starring David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, opens July 9, 2027. Screen Rant reports the film will feature John Stewart, Guy Gardner and other Lanterns alongside Superman and Lex Luthor as they face Brainiac.

The ending of Lanterns shows John taking flight, a visual tease of how his powers will look on the big screen. Screen Rant speculates he will likely aid Superman during the film's larger conflict, setting up a future Justice League team-up.

Lanterns season 2 is already in development. James Gunn has confirmed that the final episode was a season finale, not a series finale, according to Screen Rant. A writers' room has been assembled. With Hal Jordan dead, the show will likely reformulate around John Stewart and other Lanterns.

Green Lantern's long absence from the big screen makes this return exciting. Screen Rant notes that the setup for John Stewart in Man of Tomorrow makes the entire DC Universe's future even more promising.
