Lanterns Finale: Superhero TV Needs a New Formula

The eight-episode HBO series wraps up its murder mystery without a cliffhanger or DCU crossover tease, and that's a win.

Watch it. *Lanterns* ends its eight-episode run on HBO with a finale that does something rare for superhero TV: it concludes its story without a cliffhanger or a tease for the next DCU movie.

Collider reports that the eighth and final episode focuses on John Stewart's (Aaron Pierre) journey to becoming a Green Lantern in his own way, including creating a personal oath without fully joining the Lantern Corps. John never appears in a supersuit. The episode solves the mystery of Hal Jordan's (Kyle Chandler) death, with flashbacks revealing Kerry Kane's (Kelly Macdonald) guilt.

Collider notes that the series does not end with any big hints about the DCU's next project. Instead, it allows the narrative to stand on its own. While a second season is reportedly in early development (no official announcement), the finale does not rely on a cliffhanger to force a continuation.

The show includes some crossovers, like Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), but does not lean on them heavily. Collider argues this keeps the franchise accessible and encourages larger audiences to show up for major releases. The source also states that *Lanterns* sets an important example for the DCU: prioritize a self-contained, character-driven story over universe-building.

If you want a superhero story that respects its own ending, *Lanterns* is it.
