Mike Flanagan's Carrie: 8 Episodes, Prime Video, October 7

The writer-director updates Stephen King's classic for the age of active shooter drills and online cruelty.

Mike Flanagan is sending Carrie White back to prom, and she's bringing her phone.

TVLine reports that the eight-episode "Carrie" adaptation will drop all at once on Prime Video on Wednesday, October 7. This version, set in 2026, zeroes in on how social media magnifies the bullying that breaks Carrie. Flanagan told TVLine his motivation came from watching his oldest son prepare for high school and realizing how alien that world is from the '90s he remembers.

"My first reaction was I think everybody's, which is: Why do 'Carrie'?" Flanagan said. "But as I was contemplating the show, my oldest son was about to start high school and I was thinking about the world he was stepping into, how completely different it was from the high school I went to in the '90s." He said the chance to take something apart and build something new from familiar pieces, like he did with "Hill House" and "Bly Manor," became exciting.

This isn't a straight retread. Carrie's father is alive this time, and Margaret is written less as a pure zealot and more as a victim of the family's abusive dynamic. The infamous shower scene and the bloody prom still happen, but TVLine notes they get "fresh spins" that make survival even harder.

Summer H. Howell plays Carrie, Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret, Alison Thornton plays Chris Hargensen, and Siena Agudong plays Sue Snell. The source says Chris gets more depth and Sue becomes one of Carrie's supporters.

Stephen King is on board. "Stephen King was really into the idea after he saw what we were looking at," Flanagan told TVLine.
