Mulgrew: Janeway Live-Action 'Has Passed', Star Trek Pauses
The Voyager star says the window for a live-action return has closed, and the franchise is headed for a pause after the Skydance merger.

Kate Mulgrew told TrekMovie that a live-action return as Admiral Janeway is no longer happening. The comment comes as Star Trek faces what she calls a "significant pause" after Skydance's purchase of Paramount Global and the merger with Warner Bros.
Mulgrew said at the Broadcast+Cable Hall of Fame gala that "all of that has passed" regarding earlier conversations about a live-action project. She added that the merger makes the future uncertain and that a "pause" is likely. "That's all right, too," she said.
The actress had voiced Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy's second season on Netflix in July 2024. Prodigy was canceled by Paramount+ in 2023, and Netflix passed on a third season after an 18-month deal. The show now has no streaming home, though both seasons are available on Prime Video and physical media.
Mulgrew had previously mentioned a live-action pitch set in something like the Wild West, but she told TrekMovie at the Starfleet Academy premiere in January 2026 that she "didn't quite get it" and would only return "if it's excellent."
With Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds ending in 2027, no new Star Trek TV series is in production or greenlit. Paramount+ is looking for a new direction as HBO's Casey Bloys takes over oversight of the service. A new Star Trek movie is in development with "no legacy characters," but it has no green light or release window. Alex Kurtzman's deal to run the franchise is also set to expire.
Mulgrew's assessment sounds like the realistic one. The corporate shuffling has put any live-action Janeway return on ice, and the actress herself seems to have accepted it. In Star Trek, things can always change, but for now the pause is real.
