Marvel's Avengers: Endgame has done it again. Collider reports that the film, now in re-release ahead of its upcoming sequel Avengers: Doomsday, has officially overtaken Avatar to become the highest-grossing movie in global box office history. The re-release has earned more than $120 million worldwide in 10 days, pushing Endgame's cumulative global total to $2.925 billion, just above Avatar's $2.923 billion lifetime haul.

This is the second time Endgame has claimed the title. It first surpassed Avatar during its original theatrical run in 2019, but lost the top spot when the original Avatar was re-released in 2022. Endgame's own re-release, timed to build excitement for Doomsday, has now put it back on top.

Directed by the Russo Brothers, who are also returning to helm Doomsday, Endgame remains a critical benchmark for the MCU. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 94% Certified Fresh critics' score and a 96% Verified Hot audience score. The site's consensus reads: "Exciting, entertaining, and emotionally impactful, Avengers: Endgame does whatever it takes to deliver a satisfying finale to Marvel's epic Infinity Saga."

The bigger picture

In the seven years since Endgame's record-breaking run, the MCU has struggled with underperformers like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, and Thunderbolts*. But earlier this year, the franchise rebounded with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which broke Endgame's record for the biggest domestic debut of all time. Endgame itself is now on track to join Brand New Day and Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the only three films to gross more than $900 million domestically, with roughly $895 million so far.

What's next

Avengers: Doomsday, which brings back Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, is set for release this December. Early projections peg its domestic opening at more than $300 million. It will face a box office showdown with Dune: Part Three, also scheduled for December.
