Chicago P.D. Season 14 premiere: Imani's choice, Atwater's exit looms

Screen Rant says the season 14 opener sets up Officer Imani's personal struggles and a major cast departure in episode 2.

The fourteenth season of Chicago P.D. is here, and Screen Rant reports the premiere puts Officer Eva Imani (Arienne Mandi) at the center of both a difficult case and a harder personal decision.

At the end of season 13, Imani tracked down her sister Shari (Selin Çuhadaroğlu) and had to choose between letting Voight (Jason Beghe) bury evidence against her or letting the charges play out. The season 14 opener resolves that choice early. Imani does not bury the evidence. Instead, she navigates a strained relationship with her sister as Shari serves time.

The case of the week begins when Imani encounters a shooting on her way to work. The Intelligence unit investigates a man on parole who seems unlikely to have re-offended. Screen Rant reports the episode gives balanced attention to both the case and Imani's family storyline.

Meanwhile, the rest of the unit faces upheaval. Voight learns FBI-trained officers will be monitoring Intelligence, a development that does not please him. The precinct is also dealing with dislocated cops from elsewhere in the CPD.

The premiere also lays groundwork for a major cast exit. Officer Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) learns that Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom) is in labor. Screen Rant reports Atwater's final episode is season 14's second episode, directed by former cast member Jesse Lee Soffer. Atwater was preparing to co-parent with Tasha after she moved back to Chicago from Miami.

Screen Rant writes that while Atwater's departure is a loss for the show, the preparation for it on screen should make the transition easier.

Chicago P.D. season 14 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
