Doctor Who fans wondering what happened to the 2026 Christmas special now have an answer. Showrunner Russell T Davies has addressed the scrapped episode in his upcoming memoir, "The Queerest of Folk: A Life in Television," with an excerpt published by The Guardian and reported by Collider.

Davies wrote that he went to the BBC on May 6, 2026 and told them: "I don't think we should be making this." The decision was not driven by the end of the Disney+ deal, he said, but by the BBC's own financial troubles.

"The BBC is in financial trouble; it's laying off thousands of jobs in the newsroom, so should it really spend millions, with no co-production money, on a Doctor Who one-off that will soon be eclipsed by a whole new era?" Davies wrote. "Put your energy and imagination into the future," he recalled saying.

The Christmas special was originally planned to air after the spin-off "The War Between the Land and the Sea." But with Ncuti Gatwa's early departure as the 15th Doctor and the season finale leaving the lead role uncertain, the holiday episode would have had to address major changes.

Doctor Who Christmas specials have a long tradition of introducing new Doctors (David Tennant's 10th and 14th incarnations), wrapping up a current incarnation (Matt Smith's), or telling a standalone festive story. The 2026 episode would have been none of those.

Davies added that he believes the BBC had been waiting for him to suggest canceling the special. "We'd all been too polite with each other, them not wanting to let me down, me not wanting to let them down," he wrote. "But this new plan sets the show free. The future can be planned by a brand-new team. Clean and bold and bright."

Doctor Who has entered a competitive tender process to find a new producer. Until then, the show continues through Big Finish Productions audio stories, with former Doctors like Christopher Eccleston and Jodie Whittaker reprising their roles.
