Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew brings the Doctor back, animated
The BBC confirms a preschool spinoff with a young Doctor and 52 episodes, while live-action Who stays on hold.

Doctor Who is in an unusual spot. Screen Rant reports the BBC has put the show out to tender after its partnership with Disney collapsed. The planned 2026 Christmas special was scrapped, and the live-action future is uncertain after Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor regenerated and Billie Piper appeared as the next incarnation.
The one confirmed new series
The BBC has one Doctor Who project on the way, and it's animated. Screen Rant reports the BBC unveiled a first look at Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew, a preschool series for CBeebies. It follows a young Doctor and new companions on kid-friendly adventures across time and space. CBeebies and BBC iPlayer get it in late 2027 or early 2028.
The BBC has only described the young Doctor as "the Doctor, a young Time Lord," so his place in the timeline is unclear. Screen Rant notes he could be a younger version of William Hartnell's First Doctor, but nothing confirms that. Another option is a previously unseen incarnation, possibly one of the Timeless Children.
He won't travel alone. The companions are Hannah, Beastie, some kind of alien creature, and Toast-IE, who appears to be a sentient toaster robot. The four explore strange worlds across 52 11-minute episodes. Familiar enemies are back too, including the Daleks.
One detail may please longtime fans. The first-look artwork shows the young Doctor holding a sonic screwdriver that looks a lot like the Eleventh Doctor's. Screen Rant says that doesn't confirm a canonical connection, but it suggests the series is leaning into Doctor Who lore.
Why it matters
This is not the comeback adult fans are waiting for. It won't answer what happened after Billie Piper's appearance or fill the gap left by the canceled Christmas special. The BBC has not given a return date for the main show, and Screen Rant says it's still unknown whether Doctor Who will be back at all.
Still, the BBC has repeatedly said it remains committed to Doctor Who. Screen Rant says the broadcaster has described the show as a core part of its output and framed the hiatus as a way to secure the series for future generations. TARDIS Crew is small but real evidence that the Doctor isn't done yet. No other Doctor Who TV series has been confirmed for the future, and this one is built to turn preschoolers into the next generation of fans.
