Gates McFadden, known for playing Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, is writing her first comic book series, Collider reports.

The project, titled Star Trek: Crusher, will be published by IDW Comics. McFadden debuted as Crusher in 1987. She was let go after the first season but returned for season three and remained through the series and four feature films.

The miniseries fills in the gap between the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis and the third season of Star Trek: Picard. Megan Levens draws the series, and Charlie Kirchoff handles colors. Kirchoff previously colored the Hugo Award-winning graphic novel Star Trek: Lower Decks - Warp Your Own Way.

"It's such an honor to return to Starfleet and expand Beverly Crusher's storyline in a whole new way," McFadden said in a statement provided to Collider. "I've spent years bringing the words of other great writers to life in Beverly's shoes, so it's inspiring and thrilling to now be the one scripting a new chapter in this fabulous character's saga."

After the events of Nemesis, Crusher left Starfleet to raise her son Jack, later revealing to Jean-Luc Picard that Jack is his child. The comic will explore those years.

McFadden is the first Star Trek actor to write an entire miniseries, but others have also written comics for the franchise. Walter Koenig, William Shatner, John de Lancie, and George Takei have all contributed Trek comics, Collider notes.

Star Trek: Crusher is scheduled for release next summer.
