Gates McFadden Writing Star Trek: Crusher Comic for IDW

The actress who played Doctor Beverly Crusher will write a new comic series filling the gap between Nemesis and Picard.

Screen Rant reports that Gates McFadden is writing a new comic series called Star Trek: Crusher, set to be released by IDW Publishing in summer 2027. The comic will take place in the years between the film Star Trek: Nemesis and the final season of Star Trek: Picard.

McFadden played Doctor Beverly Crusher, chief medical officer on the USS Enterprise, throughout The Next Generation and its subsequent films. The 2023 finale of Picard revealed that Crusher and Captain Jean-Luc Picard had a son, Jack, and that she had kept the boy hidden from Picard for years. The new comic will explore what she was doing during that two-decade gap.

This will be McFadden's debut as a comic writer. She told Screen Rant, “I’ve spent years bringing the words of other great writers to life in Beverly’s shoes, so it’s inspiring and thrilling to now be the one scripting a new chapter in this fabulous character’s saga.” IDW CEO Davidi Jonas added, “There is a 20 year gap in the fan-favorite character’s story. Who better to tell it than Beverly Crusher herself?”

McFadden joins a tradition of Star Trek actors writing stories for their own characters. Andrew Robinson, who played Garak on Deep Space Nine, wrote a novel about the Cardassian tailor-turned-spy. JG Hertzler, who played Klingon General Martok, also authored a book about his character. Malibu Comics’ 1990s “Celebrity Series” gave one-shot comics to actors like McFadden.

The comic will be drawn by Megan Levens, a veteran of Star Trek comics, with colors by Charlie Kirchoff. No plot details beyond the timeframe have been released. Fans should expect to learn more about Jack Crusher’s early life and the events that drove Picard and Beverly apart—this time from her point of view.
