Imperfect Women Renewed for Season 2, Drops Limited Series Status

Apple TV’s whodunnit drama will return with a new story centered on Kerry Washington’s character, despite mixed reviews and no sequel book.

Screen Rant reports that Apple TV’s "Imperfect Women" has been renewed for a second season, expanding beyond its original limited series format.

The crime drama, which aired this spring, stars Joel Kinnaman, Kerry Washington, Elisabeth Moss, Corey Stoll and Kate Mara. It was created by Justin Hillian and Annie Weisman, based on Araminta Hall’s novel. Washington and Moss also served as executive producers on the first season.

According to an Apple TV press release, season 2 will tell an original story from Hillian and Weisman, set on Martha’s Vineyard and focusing on Washington’s character, Eleanor. Both Washington and Moss will return as executive producers, and Washington will appear on screen.

Washington said in a statement, “We were thrilled to see how deeply these women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world, and I’m so excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes. She’s intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself navigating complicated and sometimes messy situations.”

Apple TV’s head of programming, Matt Cherniss, added, “After a wildly entertaining first season, driven by the performances of Kerry, Lizzie and Kate, we jumped at the opportunity to expand the world of ‘Imperfect Women’ through Kerry’s fan-favorite character of Eleanor.”

The show was a hit on Apple TV’s top 10 list, even though critics and audiences were split. It holds a 45% Tomatometer and 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Screen Rant’s own review gave it 6 out of 10.

There’s no sequel novel to adapt, so the showrunners are building the second season from scratch. Apple has precedent for this: HBO turned "Big Little Lies" from a limited series into a second season, and Netflix is doing the same with "The Perfect Couple."

Watch it. If you liked the first season, you’ll be back for more of Washington’s messy, magnetic Eleanor.
