Marshals Season 2 Premiere: Dolly's Death Explained

The Season 2 premiere of "Marshals" on CBS ended with a major death: Dolly, who had grown close to Kayce, died in a car crash after her father Tom Weaver's desperate escape attempt. Kayce survived the ordeal, rescuing his son Tate and refusing to kill Weaver when given the chance.

According to TVLine's interview with showrunner Spencer Hudnut, Dolly's death was intentional from the start. "We knew that this relationship would not have a long shelf life," Hudnut said, explaining that Kayce's tragic history with loved ones and the audience's attachment to Monica made any new romance difficult to sell.

The premiere saw Kayce forced to sign over East Camp to Weaver after a threat against Tate's future. Kayce killed two guards and a lawyer, then rescued Tate from Weaver's goon Jeb by bludgeoning him with a rock. Dolly, despite never betraying Kayce, died when Weaver rolled his car down a hill with her inside.

Hudnut acknowledged that fans never fully warmed to Dolly, calling her a "beautiful breath of fresh air" who arrived too soon after Monica's death. He told TVLine the writers are mindful that Kayce will always grieve Monica, and future love interests will require careful pacing.

As for Tom Weaver, Hudnut said the character's impact will be felt later in the season, and though he's jailed now, he could return as a villain down the road. The episode ended with Kayce crumbling emotionally after seeing a family photo with Tate and Monica, hitting "the lowest" point since Monica's death.
