Netflix's Best Horror Movies: Screen Rant's Picks

A curated list of top Netflix horror films from zombie outbreaks to psychological terrors.

Screen Rant has compiled a list of the best horror movies currently streaming on Netflix. The selection covers everything from zombie outbreaks and satanic cults to psychological thrillers and creature features.

First up is Army of the Dead. Zack Snyder returns to the zombie genre after his Dawn of the Dead remake. In this one, a zombie outbreak is contained inside Las Vegas, and a crew of mercenaries is hired to retrieve money from a vault. Watch it for the intelligent alpha zombie that wages war on the intruders.

For Stephen King fans, 1922 is an overlooked adaptation of a novella from Full Dark, No Stars. Thomas Jane plays a Nebraska farmer who convinces his son to help murder his wife when she wants to sell the farm. The wife is thrown into a dry well, and rats feed on her. The farmer is haunted by visions and sounds, including rats descending on him. Screen Rant calls it one of King's scarier adaptations.

Oxygen is a rare horror movie with no monsters. The French sci-fi film is set entirely in a cryogenic chamber. Mélanie Laurent plays a woman trapped inside as her oxygen levels drop. Her performance keeps the audience engaged in this edge-of-the-seat experience.

Ouija (2014) capitalizes on the eerie reputation of the board game. A group of friends awaken dark forces after playing with a Ouija board, leading to haunting and fatal events. The atmosphere and sense of inevitable dread distinguish it from typical jump-scare fare.

Bird Box became a viral sensation thanks to the meme of Sandra Bullock blindfolded. It was Netflix's most-streamed original movie for years. The horror comes from unseen entities that drive people to suicide when looked at. A sequel, Bird Box Barcelona, was released in 2023.

The Platform is a Spanish social commentary set in a vertical high-rise prison. A platform of food starts on the top floor and lowers to each level. As food runs out, prisoners resort to murder and cannibalism. Screen Rant says it features one of the most harrowing plot twists of any horror movie on Netflix.

Apostle is a gothic horror from director Gareth Evans (The Raid). Dan Stevens stars as a man who travels to a Welsh island to rescue his sister from a cult. The cult practices pagan rituals and serves a hungry goddess. Screen Rant notes the film is typically gory for Evans and drew comparisons to The Wicker Man.

The Babysitter is a relatively short horror comedy. A young boy discovers his babysitter is part of a satanic cult. With broad characters, bloody kills, and a villainous role from Samara Weaving, it's hugely entertaining. It spawned a sequel starring Jenna Ortega.

The Ritual follows a group of friends on a hiking trip who find themselves in a forest stalked by an evil force. Dark and ominous in tone, the movie layers psychological imagery with creature feature scares. Screen Rant calls it among the best Netflix horror movies.

Finally, Gerald's Game comes from horror maestro Mike Flanagan. It adapts Stephen King's novel about a married couple seeking to reignite their spark when something unexpected happens, putting the wife in a fight for her life. Screen Rant says it has one of the most disturbing scenes in recent horror memory.

Screen Rant provides the full list, but these ten are a great place to start. Pick your subgenre and press play.
