The Housemaid Remains a Streaming Hit as Sequel Nears

Screen Rant says Sydney Sweeney's thriller is still charting on Amazon and Apple nearly nine months after release, and a sequel has a date.

The Housemaid is still showing up on streaming charts nine months after its theatrical release, according to Screen Rant. On Oct. 6, the R-rated thriller ranked No. 15 on Amazon's US movie chart and No. 10 on the Apple TV Store's chart in the United States.

Screen Rant notes the film has appeared on Amazon's chart for 243 days and on Apple's for 184. It started streaming on Starz in April, where it is no longer available, and Screen Rant calls it the platform's best-performing film of all time. It has kept selling well on VOD services including Google Play.

The movie, based on Freida McFadden's 2022 novel, stars Sweeney as a young woman with a troubled past who takes a live-in housemaid job for a wealthy family hiding dark secrets. Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar also appear.

For now, The Housemaid can be rented or bought from $5.99, Screen Rant says, and it will arrive on HBO Max on Oct. 9. The film has grossed more than $400 million worldwide against a $35 million budget.

The sequel

Screen Rant reports that The Housemaid's Secret, based on McFadden's 2023 novel, is scheduled for Dec. 17, 2027. Sweeney reprises her role as Millie Calloway, who takes a new housekeeping job for another wealthy family. Michele Morrone returns as Enzo Accardi, an Italian groundskeeper and Millie's love interest.

New cast members include Kirsten Dunst as Wendy Garrick, Paul Anthony Kelly as Douglas Garrick, Brittany Snow as Marybeth Simonds and Stephen Kalyn as Brock Cunningham, according to Screen Rant.

Screen Rant shares the sequel's synopsis:

In The Housemaid's Secret, Millie returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she's never allowed to see, only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.

With a sequel scheduled, Sweeney isn't done with the role yet.
