The Monkey Climbs to No. 6 on HBO Max Global Chart

Stephen King's horror adaptation is banging its drum up the streaming charts nearly two years after its theatrical run.

Stephen King's "The Monkey" is making noise on streaming again. Written and directed by Osgood Perkins, the film now sits at No. 6 on HBO Max's Global Top 10 Movies chart, per FlixPatrol. It lands just ahead of "Ice Road: Vengeance" at No. 7 and behind "The Therapy" at No. 7.

This isn't the horror adaptation's first streaming win. It became a hit in mid-2025 after premiering on Disney+ and Hulu in the United States. Internationally, it has cracked Top 10 lists on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple VOD.

The film stars Theo James in a dual twin role with Christian Convery, Tatiana Maslany, Colin O'Brien, Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, Elijah Wood and Adam Scott. It centers on Hal Shelburn, a man haunted by a wind-up monkey that causes bizarre deaths. King himself called the adaptation "bats--t insane."

The Monkey scored generally positive reviews from critics. It also pulled in nearly $69 million globally against an $11 million budget, per Screen Rant. That makes it Neon's third-highest-grossing movie ever, behind "Parasite" ($258 million) and Perkins' own "Longlegs" ($128 million).

Why no sequel yet

Perkins hasn't expressed interest in making a sequel unless it feels different. Screen Rant notes he said the same about "Longlegs" around the same time, only to now have a follow-up in the works with Nicolas Cage returning. So the door isn't fully closed on the monkey's return.
