Venom's True Form Revealed After 38 Years

Marvel finally shows what the symbiote looks like without a host, courtesy of a new comic.

After nearly four decades, Marvel has given fans a first look at Venom's true form. The reveal happens in the latest issue of "Queen in Black: Venom Unchained", which Screen Rant reports shows the symbiote on a psychic plane called the Mindscape. There, the creature appears as a skinny black humanoid with striated upper arms, horned shoulders, and the iconic white logo and eyes.

The symbiote usually looks like a puddle of goo without a host. But the Mindscape allows it to show its mental self-image, and that image is more alien than the muscular version fans know. Those muscles came from Eddie Brock, a gym rat who first bonded with the symbiote 38 years ago. The symbiote has kept that look ever since, thanks to that formative connection.

The issue also sets up a new era for the character. Eddie Brock and Venom are reunited after the symbiote bonded with Dylan Brock and Mary Jane Watson in recent years. Marvel is launching "Venom Volume 7" from writer Charles Soule and artist Tommaso Bianchi, which will see the pair return to being antiheroes in Alphabet City. Eddie has a grudge against other Marvel heroes, who see him as a villain after he bonded with Carnage while Venom was away.

For movie fans, this comic moment connects to the symbiote's origins in the films. The true form matches what some expected from an alien without a human host: leaner, less bulky, and more otherworldly. While the movie versions have always shown Venom as muscular, this is the first official look at what the creature considers its real self.

"Queen in Black: Venom Unchained #3" and "Venom #262" are available now from Marvel Comics.
