Charles Soule, the writer behind Marvel's Daredevil and several Star Wars comics, has been filling in the blanks left by the sequel trilogy. In an exclusive interview with Collider at FanX Salt Lake City, Soule explained how he approaches these stories: he starts with the questions the movies don't answer.

For The Fall of Kylo Ren, those questions center on Kylo's mindset after Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He has just killed his father, met Rey, confronted Luke Skywalker, and become Supreme Leader of the First Order. All of that happened over roughly a week or two in the film timeline. Soule saw a ton of rich story ground to cover in that gap.

This is Soule's third Kylo Ren comic. He previously wrote The Rise of Kylo Ren (2019), which showed Ben Solo's fall to the dark side, and The Legacy of Vader, which forced the Skywalkers to wrestle with Anakin's legacy. The Fall of Kylo Ren jumps into the period between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, showing how the villain forged his own path of tyranny.

Soule works closely with Lucasfilm and Marvel on everything. He brought his questions to the story group and found them receptive because his ideas leaned on what the films implied but never stated outright. The result, he said, adds more nuance to Ben Solo and makes Kylo Ren more interesting in retrospect.

Issue #3 of 5 is due out October 21. It will pick up with Kylo Ren forcibly bringing the Knights of Ren under his command, while his flagship faces a dire threat and Generals Hux and Pryde scheme in the background. A dark artifact and an ever-improving droid are also involved. Artist Will Sliney returns for the series, which aims to wrap up this year.
