Dustfall is a six-episode crime thriller headed to Apple TV, and it is being sold on a subgenre most crime dramas avoid: tropic noir.

Screen Rant reports the series adapts The Unbelieved, a 2022 novel by Vikki Petraitis, with Anna Torv and Juliet Stevenson in the leads. Screen Rant puts the premiere at Oct. 11, 2026, on ABC Television. Reported: Apple TV has acquired distribution rights, and the show reaches the streaming service in 2027.

Torv is an Emmy Award nominee and a Mindhunter alum. Screen Rant raises that comparison early.

What tropic noir means

Screen Rant describes tropic noir as noir moved out of cold, rain-slicked settings and into a tropical or subtropical landscape. The cynicism stays; the discomfort changes. Seasonal dust, sweltering heat and bright, sun-soaked scenery sit above hidden rot and violence. Screen Rant's argument is that this series could popularize a subgenre crime thrillers have rarely explored.

That is the pitch here. Screen Rant reports Dustfall is set and filmed in regional Australia. The plot follows Antigone "Tig" Pollard, a seasoned detective who returns to her hometown of North Gap to investigate a string of drink-spiking assaults. The case shifts when the primary suspect is found murdered.

A subgenre label is a promise, not a story. Screen Rant is right that few crime dramas make this promise. Dustfall still has to keep it.

Noir's wider comeback

Screen Rant places the show in a broader noir revival. Its examples:

  • Spider-Noir, which Screen Rant says mixes pulp superhero themes with classic noir archetypes.
  • Lanterns on HBO, a small-town murder mystery built on the Green Lantern universe. Screen Rant calls it the True Detective of superhero shows.
  • Sugar on Apple TV, which Screen Rant says leans on classic Hollywood history before an extraterrestrial turn.
  • Rebel Ridge on Netflix, a neo-noir western in Screen Rant's framing.

The dates that matter

Nothing here is watchable tonight. The two dates to keep are Oct. 11, 2026, for the ABC Television run and 2027 for the Apple TV arrival. The novel is the only piece of this story you can pick up now: Screen Rant notes The Unbelieved has won literary awards and holds a 4.2 out of 5 rating on Goodreads.

Our take: per Screen Rant, the Mindhunter comparison rests on Torv's casting alone. Six episodes and one case in regional Australia is a different shape of show. The tropic noir label is the more useful signal, and it is the one the series has to earn.
