Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin Set for Sicario 3

The Hollywood Reporter confirms the trio will return for a third installment, with Padraic McKinley directing and Steven Knight writing.

Actors Benicio Del Toro (l), Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin attend the photocall of Sicario during the 68th Annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, on 19 May 2015.

The long wait for a third Sicario film appears to be nearing an end. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin are set to return for Sicario 3.

Del Toro will reprise his role as Alejandro Gillick and Brolin as Matt Graver, while Blunt returns as Kate Macer, the FBI agent she played in the 2015 original. Black Label Media and Thunder Road have attached Padraic McKinley to direct and Steven Knight to write the script.

The sequel would follow Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the 2018 follow-up directed by Stefano Sollima. That film centered on Brolin's federal agent recruiting Del Toro's character to stop Mexican drug cartels from trafficking terrorists across the U.S. border.

No storyline has been announced for the third movie, which was delayed by the 2023 Hollywood writers strike. It is expected to wrap up the trilogy that Taylor Sheridan originated with the first two films.

Molly Smith, who runs Black Label Media with her sister Rachel Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that the project was close to moving forward once the strike ended. "We're very close. It's one of the projects where we're ready to put the train on the tracks as soon as the strike ends and our path is cleared," she said. "Taylor always envisioned it as a trilogy, so we have to close it out right. There's no point in making it unless we can do justice to the true fans of Sicario."

Producers will include Molly Smith and the Luckinbill twins for Black Label Media, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road, and Ed McDonnell. Black Label Media also co-financed La La Land.

Deadline was first to report the casting news.
