The long-awaited third movie in the Sicario franchise is officially moving forward, and it's bringing back the original trio of stars.

Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin are all set to return for Sicario 3, according to a report from Deadline. The film has been in development for eight years, with the second entry, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, arriving in 2018.

But the biggest change this time is that Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the original screenplay and returned for the sequel, is no longer part of the creative process. Steven Knight of Peaky Blinders fame is taking over scripting duties. Padraic McKinley will direct.

Denis Villeneuve, who directed the first film, is also absent, as he was for the sequel. Stefano Sollima directed Day of the Soldado.

A franchise that started strong

The original Sicario debuted in 2015 and earned $84.9 million worldwide against a reported $30 million budget. It received three Academy Award nominations: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound Editing.

Critics gave it a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences at 85%. It also earned an A- CinemaScore.

The story follows an idealistic FBI agent recruited by a government task force to pursue a drug lord. The mission forces her to question everything she believes and pits her against a shadowy consultant with a dangerous agenda.

The first film also starred Daniel Kaluuya, Victor Garber, Jon Bernthal and Jeffrey Donovan. The sequel shifted focus to del Toro's Alejandro Gillick and Brolin's Matt Graver.
