Steven Spielberg Returns to Transformers Franchise
The Hollywood Reporter says the legendary director will executive produce the eighth live-action film, with Michael Bay in talks to direct.

Steven Spielberg is coming back to the Transformers movies at Paramount, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet reports that Spielberg will oversee all creative aspects of the next live-action entry and serve as executive producer.
Michael Bay, who directed the first five installments, is in negotiations to direct again. Bay’s Transformers filmography includes the 2007 original, "Revenge of the Fallen" (2009), "Dark of the Moon" (2011), "Age of Extinction" (2014), and "The Last Knight" (2017). He did not direct the 2019 film.
Shia LaBeouf, who played Sam Witwicky in the early films, will not return, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. No other casting or plot details have been revealed.
Spielberg met with Paramount co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg in August 2025, ahead of the studio’s merger with Warner Bros Discovery. The script is being written by Jason Fuchs and set in the modern day. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is helping develop the project, with Spielberg reading and approving the script.
Spielberg held creative roles on the first two Transformers films, which launched a franchise that has grossed over $5.4 billion worldwide. Producers include di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and Hasbro.
