Collider reports that Steven Spielberg will executive produce the next live-action Transformers movie. Michael Bay is returning to direct, Deadline reports, and he'll also produce alongside Spielberg. Bay last directed the franchise in 2017 with Transformers: The Last Knight.

No release date has been announced. Collider notes the franchise has made more than $5.2 billion worldwide over seven movies since 2007, and it has been a major success for Paramount.

The history

Spielberg's involvement goes back to the first movie. His production company, Amblin Entertainment, lists him as one of the producers on the 2007 film, which introduced Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky and made Bumblebee his first car. Bay directed the first five live-action movies. Travis Knight took over for Bumblebee, and Steven Caple Jr. directed Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

The box office

The franchise's high point came with Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction, which each passed $1.1 billion globally. The Last Knight made $605 million against a massive budget, Bumblebee earned $468 million, and Rise of the Beasts made $439 million in 2023. Those numbers may help explain why Paramount is going back to Bay.

For parents

This is an announcement, not a review. There's no date to circle yet, so it's too early to plan a family movie night around it. If your kids have only seen Bumblebee, they may be in for something louder. Bay's movies are the ones where giant robots flatten cities. Start bracing now.
